Jazz Goes to the Movies

by Steve Paikin Thursday October 27, 2011

The Jazz Performance and Education Centre had their third annual gala last night and blew the roof off the George Weston Recital Hall in North York.

Heather Bambrick emceed the event, which featured a tentet of some of the country's top jazz artists, such as Don Thompson, Terry Clarke (both recipients of the Order of Canada), Mark Promane, and Mike Murley. And the wonderful thing about all ten of them is that they all teach their craft to the next generation at many of Ontario's post-secondary institutions such as the University of Toronto, and Humber and Mohawk Colleges.

On vocals, Denzal Sinclaire was Mr. Smooth, a young up-and-comer named Francois Mulder was spectacular, and oh my goodness, Jackie Richardson can still belt 'em out as well as anyone. The Mario Romano Quartet (Romano, P:at Labarbera on sax, Roberto Occhnipinto on bass, and Mark Kelso on drums) kicked off the second half. Such talent.

Last night's theme was "Jazz Goes to the Movies," and the house enjoyed some of the silver screen's most popular tunes.  Here's the playlist from last night, plus the films the songs are from:
