Remembering Iran's Revolution: scenes from Toronto's Iranian street protest

by Mike Miner Monday February 8, 2010

David Erwin's video: “The Protests Continue.” Political activist and Iran rally organizer, Mehrdad Ariannejad shares his memories of the revolution and provides insights into the Iran of today. Ariannejad was 14 years old and living in Tehran at the time of the revolution.

Yesterday, many from Toronto's Iranian community took to the street. They gathered in Mel Lastman square to protest Iran's current regime, using an upcoming anniversary to help rally people to the event. David Erwin was there, and took the pictures and created the video you see above.

David writes:

Feb. 11th 1979, is commonly referred to in Persian as 22 Bahman.  This date marks the day that the Shah’s army declared neutrality, essentially guaranteeing the success of the revolution.  This week, protest rallies are being held in cities across the world in support of opposition groups in Iran.  On Feb. 11th, the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, opposition groups inside Iran promise mass street protests, despite warnings of a severe government crackdown.   The opposition has been using religious and national holidays as opportunities to protest against the government.
