First of all, thanks to everyone who sent an email today about last night's program featuring four former Ontario premiers. In fact, I just got off the phone with a viewer who said they were all so non-partisan and genuine that if they were all running today, she wouldn't know whom to vote for.
I was also pleased to see that Ian Urquhart of The Toronto Star decided to do a story on the broadcast.
Thanks to Ernie Eves, Mike Harris, Bob Rae, and David Peterson for sharing their stories in what the vast majority of viewers say was a wonderful, sincere forum.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to attend Ian Scott's funeral. Mr. Scott, as you know, was Ontario's attorney general during the Peterson years (1985-90). I expect the church to be packed. He touched so many people's lives, both before and after his political life.
One person who has had scant references in the media coverage of Mr. Scott's life is Neil McCormack and he deserves so much more. Neil had been a friend of Ian's for many many years and essentially helped run his life after the stroke, 13 years ago.
I was one of the people Neil called from time to time, asking if I would like to have lunch with Mr. Scott. And I always did. Although he had enormous difficulty speaking after the stroke, he was still a delightful guy to be around. He loved to gossip about what was happening at Queen's Park and stayed engaged in life, in spite of his obvious difficulties.
Mr. Scott died in his sleep two days ago. He once told me he wanted to make it to 70, then just quietly pass away. He made it to 72. Those two extra years were a gift for us all.
