How Happy Are You?

by Navin Vaswani Thursday September 24, 2009

Tonight's Your Agenda program is all about happiness; women's happiness, to be exact. Studies suggest women, from all walks of life, are becoming unhappier. Interestingly enough, as women become unhappier, men are doing the opposite. It's been a fascinating topic to research.

One of the ways happiness has been tracked over the years has been through the United States General Social Survey. Year after year, since 1972, they've asked both men and women: "Taken all together how would you say things are these days? Would you say that you are: (3) Very happy; (2) Pretty happy; (1) Not too happy."*

I know; we're not talking about the most scientific survey here. I think we can all agree that happiness is difficult to measure; it's subjective.

While going through all my research and thinking about the topic, I've tried to answer that question, from the U.S. General Social Survey, myself. I also put it towards some of the more important people in my life.

My brother's response, when I put the question to him: "It's not that simple." He eventually settled at two. My significant other also came in at the middle of the scale. Ditto for one of my best friends. Another good friend responded with: "Negative one. And I'm having a fantastic day today." Even my parents couldn't slot themselves at the "very happy" end of the scale. I think they colluded on the assignment though, as they both offered answers of 2.5.

As for me, after much contemplation, I'm coming in at 1.5. I blame my age. I'm 27 years old, freaking out about turning 30, and wondering when I will be financially secure enough to get married. (According to many people around me, the answer is never.) Uncertainty reigns. But don't get me wrong: I'm thankful for family and friends, and a good job. I just don't think you'll find too many people in this day and age who will tell you that they're "very happy."

OK, enough about me. How about you? Where do you slot on the happiness scale? Is the elusive number three attainable? I'd love to read your thoughts.

And, for some fun, to get a better of idea of just how happy or unhappy you are, here are a couple of quizzes you can take:
